In January of 1998, Vice Provost Sean
Sullivan announced the formation of an ad-hoc task
group in "High Performance Research Computing." This
committee was formed, in large part, to evaluate the conjecture that the
infrastructure available to UB faculty in computational science and
engineering was substandard. Further, it was conjectured that the lack
of satisfactory facilities places this university at risk in terms of
being competitive at the national level in its ability to attract
faculty and to secure research funding in areas that rely on significant
computation and visualization. The group was charged with evaluating the
current scenario in computational science and engineering at UB,
evaluating the capabilities and limitations of the current
infrastructure, and making recommendations in terms of such
infrastructure. The
final report contains confidential material and should not be
distributed other than to members of the UB community. If you agree not
to distribute the final report to any personnel without a UB
affiliation, you may acquire the
report, which is in PDF format.
