William R. Greiner (1934-2009)
UB's 13th President, 1991 - 2003.
Bill Greiner (President) and Tom Headrick (Provost) had the
vision and conviction to create the Center for
Computational Research in the late 1990s. CCR grew into a world-class
supercomputing center serving the local and international communities.
It thrust UB into
the national spotlight in terms of research and technology,
helping to attract and retain world-class scientists and
scholars, as well as support regional development.
I thank Bill and Tom for having the guts to appoint me
as Founding Director of CCR and support my vision of the Center.
While Bill and I had known each other for years, we became
quite close due to his passion for CCR. He spent many a day
wandering around our center, giving tours to dignitaries,
and discussing events of the day (including some well
appreciated mentoring). I also had the pleasure of spending a
fair amount of time with Bill during our travels to Albany and
Washington for various events, including raising the funds
to establish the Center of Excellence in Bioinformatics.
My fondest memories, however, are of the times we spent
at basketball and football games, as well as the many events
he and Carol hosted at his home.
Rest in peace, my friend. I love you. - Russ Miller
Some videos and pictures of Bill are included below.
Alas, I no longer have access to the CCR or UB archives, or
I would have included many more photos.
