Development of this bibliography has been supported in part by the National Science Foundation, Research on Learning and Education (ROLE) Program, grant #REC-0106338, 1 July 2001 - 31 December 2003.

Last Update: 28 June 2005

Note: NEW or UPDATED material this month is highlighted

Note 0: In order to make this bibliography reasonably manageable, as well as to make it easier for me to keep it updated, this bibliography implicitly includes all items listed in the bibliographies of the items explicitly included on this list :-)
Note 1: Additions to this document are more than welcome, and should be sent to Prof. William J. Rapaport, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, 201 Bell Hall, SUNY Buffalo, Buffalo, NY 14260-2000, or by email to me at: rapaport@cse.buffalo.edu
Note 2: This bibliography excludes most of the literature on word-sense disambiguation, which, although clearly related to contextual vocabulary acquisition, is a subfield of computational linguistics unto itself. For some recent computational work on this topic, see ``Special Issue on Word Sense Disambiguation'', Computational Linguistics Vol. 24, No. 1 (March 1998).
Note 3: This bibliography also excludes most of the literature on semantic similarity, which, although related to contextual vocabulary acquisition, is a subfield of computational linguistics unto itself. A few such items are, however, listed, and you should consult their bibliographies for further documentation. See, e.g., Meara 1992, Landauer & Dumais 1997, Landauer et al. 1998, Landauer 2000, Widdows & Dorow 2002

Bibliography of Other Bibliographies:

  1. A complementary bibliography on vocabulary learning (not restricted to contextual learning, and focusing more on the influence of phonology on L1/L2 aquisition) has been assembled by Dr Monica Hill, English Centre, University of Hong Kong, Pokfulam Road, HK; e-mail: mmhill@hkucc.hku.hk; URL: http://ec.hku.hk/mmhill.

  2. Another, vast, complementary bibliography on vocabulary acquisition in general (though with a focus on second-language (L2) learning) is Paul Meara's Vocabulary Acquisition Research Group Archive (VARGA), sponsored by the University of Wales Swansea's Centre for Applied Language Studies Vocabulary Acquisition Research Group.

  3. There is yet another, vast, complementary Annotated Bibliography on Vocabulary, Reading, and Second Language Acquisition, compiled by Michael Shand.

  4. There is yet another, huge, bibliography, compiled by Rob Waring, Notre Dame Seishin University: "References or Bibliography: Second Language Vocabulary Acquisition / Applied Linguistics / Second Language Acquisition / Teaching English as a Second or Foreign Language / TESL / TESOL/ ESL / ESOL and Language Learning"

  5. There is a huge, categorized bibliography on vocabulary acquisition compiled by Paul Nation, "An alphabetised list of vocabulary references". Category 18 is "Words in Context".

Abstract: Latent Semantic Analysis (LSA) is computational model of human acquisition and representation of the meaning of words and passages. It assumes that the meaning of a passage can be approximated as the sum of the meaning of its words. Thus, a body of text can be cast as a large system of (ill-conditioned) simultaneous linear equations, which can be solved by Singular Value Decomposition. The surprising result is that a wide variety of linguistic, psychological, and psycholinguistic phenomena are closely modeled in this way. Examples include simulation of the astounding 10/day rate of vocabulary learning by school-children, passing college final exams multiple choice tests, simulating human logical fallacies, modeling laboratory recognition memory phenomena, and, by extension, modeling aspects of predication and metaphor. Moreover, model simulations have been used successfully to replace humans in tasks requiring understanding of text. Perhaps the most dramatic example of the latter is accurately predicting the scores human judges give to exam essays.
