Final Report on Workshop on Secure
Knowledge Management (SMK 2004)
Professors Shambhu Upadhyaya from the University at Buffalo Computer
Science and Engineering Department and H. Raghav Rao, from the
University at Buffalo School of Management have organized a workshop
on Secure Knowledge Management on September 23-24, 2004 at the
Buffalo-Niagara Marriott.
The topics included various aspects of security in the context of
knowledge management, digital rights management and secure content
management.
Since the 9/11 attacks, many organizations, especially the US
government, have increased their knowledge about KMS. With the
advent of intranets and web-access, it is even more crucial to
protect corporate knowledge as numerous individuals have access to
assets of a corporation. Therefore, there is a need for effective
mechanisms for securing data, information, and knowledge, as well as
the applications.
The objective of this workshop in Secure Knowledge Management was to
help raise the awareness of academics and practitioners in this
critical area of research and motivate questions that are important
to the research community. The workshop essentially met its goals by
organizing 10 technical sessions, three keynote talks, two plenary
sessions, one dinner banquet talk, one luncheon keynote, a high
power panel on women and cyber security and a technical poster
session. More than 120 people participated in this two day event and
exchanged thoughts. Presenters from industry, academia, and
government included:
- Hun Kim, deputy director of the Department of Homeland
Security's National Cyber Security Division
