The Phase Problem

• Experiment yields:

  • reflections
  • associated intensities

• Phase angles are lost in experiment.

• Underlying atomic arrangement is related to the reflections by

a 3-D Fourier transform.

• Phase Problem: determine the set of phases corresponding to the reflections.
