COURSE ANNOUNCEMENT CENTER FOR COGNITIVE SCIENCE UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO INTRODUCTION TO COGNITIVE SCIENCE CSE 575/LIN 575/PHI 575/PSY 575/APY 526: TTh 11:00 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. William J. Rapaport Fall 2001 Introduction to Cognitive Science will be offered as a cross-listed course by the Departments of Computer Science & Engineering, Linguistics, Philosophy, Psychology, and Anthropology, Fall 2001, taught by William J. Rapaport, Associate Professor of Computer Science and Adjunct Professor of Philosophy. I expect there to be numerous guest lectures by faculty members of the UB Center for Cognitive Science. Cognitive science is the interdisciplinary study of cognition. Cogni- tion includes mental states and processes such as thinking, reasoning, remembering, language understanding and generation, visual perception, learning, consciousness, emotions, etc. Some cognitive scientists limit their study to human cognition, though most consider cognition indepen- dently of its implementation in humans or computers. Some cognitive scientists study cognition independently of the cognitive agent's en- vironment; others study it within the context of the person, the so- ciety, the culture. Cognitive science can also be defined as, roughly, the (hopefully non-empty) intersection of the disciplines of computer science (especially artificial intelligence), linguistics, philosophy (especially philosophy of mind and philosophy of language), and psychol- ogy (especially cognitive psychology). Some writers on cognitive sci- ence add cognitive anthropology to this list, and most would add the cognitive neurosciences. The former deals in part with the societal and cultural context mentioned above. The latter is concerned with the ``implementation'' of mind in human physiology. Course requirements will include a term paper or research project in cognitive science. The course will be open to all graduate students in any department and to qualified undergraduates in any department.
