Bona" | To: "William J. Rapaport" | Subject: CSE584 Questions | | Dear Dr. Rapaport, | | I have a few questions about the Philosophy of Computer Science course: | | 1. Must reading journals be handwritten, or may they be typed? Either is fine, unless your handwriting is illegible :-) | 1.a. If electronic reading journals are permitted, may they be stored in a | public place ( e.g. a publicly-accessible weblog)? I suppose so, as long as I can easily access them when I request them. On the other hand, you should only use very short quotations from published sources if you are going to use a publically accessible website and you must use complete and correct bibliographic citation forms. See my How to Write website for guidelines. Note that a personal journal seen only by you and me can be much more informal, but anything "published" must adhere to certain legal (and moral) requirements about "fair use" and proper citation of sources. | 2. I put together a printer-friendly reading packet for myself for the first | reading assignment. It combines the assignment "specs" and the readings | available online into a single PDF. If I find this useful and continue to | prepare the readings for myself in this way, would you object to my sharing | the files with other students in the class? Feel free; sounds like a fine idea. I'd like to see how it works. | 3. May I make audio recordings of your lectures? Yes. | 3.a. May I share audio recordings with other students in the class? Yes. But again, note that publicizing something like that might infringe on someone else's rights, so if it's just me lecturing that gets taped, I have no problems, but if it includes other students asking questions, commenting in class, etc., their rights need to be considered before sharing tapes. | Thanks for your time. | | -Jonathan
