Represent "proliferate"

Have done so far:

1. Reviewed Ehrlich's case frames. I am familiar with all of them including some of the baics of how they work in the verb algorithim (for instance each verb has to be specified as being of type "transitive", "bitransitive", etc.) What I am unfamiliar with is how to represent information in such a manner that Ehrlich's algorithm can find the meaning of unknown verbs. It is one thing to know the case frames, quite another to know how Ehrlich viewed them and incorporated them into the algorithim.

2. I met with Rajeev on Saturday (3/2/02) and we discussed the basics of how the algorithim worked. We also discussed how to represent verbs, adverbs and prepositional phrases.

3. I reviwed Marc's paper. There are a few representations where Marc uses case frames not present in Ehrlich's algorithim. For example Marc uses Agent/Act as opposed to Agent/Act/Object. Here it will be easy to rework Marc's representations to fit Ehrlich's algorithim.

Where I will encounter difficulty is with the metaphor. Marc introduced a case frame foreign to Ehrlich's algorithim. This will force me to do two things:

1. Abandon Marc's representation for the sake of the algorithim.

2. Based on the case frames Ehrlich uses figure out a meaningful way to represent the similie presented in the passage. It seems like a mixed blessing that the passage relies on a similie. I have been tossing around the idea of using a rule case frame to represent a similie but I would have to know more about Ehrlich's algorithim before attempting the representation.

To Do:

- Continue reading and general research

- Continue reviewing Ehrlich's algorithim with Rajeev
