Eastern Great Lakes Theory Workshop

Dates: September 6 and 7, 2008

Location: Ramada Inn & Conference Center, Amherst, NY.

This workshop will be an opportunity for researchers in theory of computation within a few hours driving distance to Buffalo to interact. Talks will begin after lunch Saturday afternoon, September 6, and the event will end after lunch Sunday, September 7.

A big thanks to the more than 80 attendees who made the workshop a great success (we had 94 registrants but some could not make it). Below are some more information related to the workshop:

Student Support

We have funding to waive registration fees for a limited number of graduate students on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please email cse-workshop "at" cse.buffalo.edu to take advantage of this opportunity. Sorry, all the student support slots have been used up.


The registration fees is $80. This will cover Saturday lunch, Sunday breakfast and lunch and all refreshments during breaks (Saturday dinner is not included). To register online, click here. (The deadline date was mentioned by mistake as Sep 2 earlier.)

Cancellation Policy: Cancellation requests received on or before August 28, 2008 are fully refundable less a processing fee of $10. There will be no refunds after August 28, 2008. All cancellation requests must be in writing via email to cse-workshop "at" cse.buffalo.edu.


The workshop is reserving a block of rooms at the Ramada Inn. These rooms are being held at a first-come-first-serve basis till August 1, 2008. The rooms charges are $69 per night (+tax). This rate is guaranteed until the cutoff date unless the block fills prior to that. To make your reservations, please call (716) 636-7500 and ask for the UB Department of Computer Science and Engineering room block to avail the special room rate.

The Ramada Inn and many nearby hotels are sold out because of the Buffalo Bills game on September 7th. If you have not already booked a room at the Ramada and are looking for other options, feel free to send an email to cse-workshop "at" cse.buffalo.edu for suggestions consider the choices below. (However, please call up the Ramada at (716) 636 7500 to check if rooms are available due to cancellations.)

Update (Aug 27): As of today morning, a few close-by hotels have some vacancies (of the order of 5 rooms). Below are a few that we know about (with their contact numbers and prices):

  1. Courtyard by Marriott, (716) 626-2300 ($159)
  2. Red Roof Inn, (716) 689-7474 ($79)
  3. Comfort Inn, (716) 688-0811 ($119 with a 2 night minimum)

The last two are at the diagonally opposite corner of the UB north campus from the Ramada Inn (5 minutes drive according to google maps), while the Marriott is bit to the south of the campus (6 minutes drive accroding to google maps). Another option is Hotel Indigo, which is next to the Comfort and Red Roof Inn. (We do not know about their prices or availability.)
