Crystals have an internal structure that is triply periodic.
The precise internal order of a crystalline materials can be demonstrated when crystal is used as a 3-D diffraction grating for radiation that has a wavelength comparable to the interatomic distances within the crystal (approx 1 angstrom).
This resulted in the use of X-Rays with wavelengths on the order of 1A
(10-10 m).
