Late call

This sentence is a dead give away. The verb is obviously died.

But what if the verb had been something a bit more out of the ordinary, say for instance:

- succumbed

-expired

-perished

Each of which has the likelihood of being unknown to at least some eight grade readers.

I thought it would be interesting to categorize what gives away this verb:

- The fact that it is a late call. I think that in the United States its a fairly common assumption that if you get a call late at night its traditionally bad news (son's in jail, your car was stolen and found in the river, etc.) But it largely falls into the category of common sense.

- The fact that bad news is mentioned in the passage. Only confirms the late call hypothesis proposed above.

But how to get CASSIE to understand this bit of common sense? For a human it is basically automatic but for CASSIE it would be such a difficult task.
