Essay Assignment - Final Draft

You have completed all the pieces of your paper and have received feedback about your paper so far. The time has come to polish your paper and turn in your final essay.

Please take note of the comments on your paper. You should fix grammatical/spelling errors. If you lost points for content or coherence, you should improve in those areas. You should take adavantage of the The Writing Place on campus (209 Baldy Hall).

For many of you, you will also have to edit your paper as the requirements for the final paper is that it be no more than 4 full pages in length. This is a firm requirement. This is much like paper submission guidelines for many journals and conferences (ie - there is a firm limit and you must stick to it or your paper will not even be considered). Therefore, you will need to edit your paper appropriately so that it fits within the page limit constraints.

Your submission for the final essay consists of two parts. You should prepare your final submission as stated. You should staple all the pieces of Part 1 together and staple the pieces of Part 2 together. You should then combine the two parts, using a paperclip (a staple probably won't hold), with Part 1 on top and Part 2 after it.

Part 1: The final paper (all pieces should be typed)
  • Page 1 - A title page, which should only include your name and the title of the paper. There should be no other information on the title page.
  • Page 2 - Your revised abstract for your paper. Your abstract for this paper should not exceed 1/2 page double spaced. Abstracts that are too long will not receive full credit. The abstract is the only thing that should be on this page.
  • Page 3, 4, 5, 6 - Your final paper. You do not need to indicate your title or name at the top of the body of the paper. Citations should be formatted as indicated in this document and all references should be cited at least once in the body of your paper. For full credit, your paper must be at least four pages in length. Your paper can not exceed four pages in length, or it will be assigned an automatic grade of F. Formatting for the main body of the paper is double-spaced, 1" margins all around, and a font no smaller than 10pt, but no larger than 12pt.
  • Page 7 - Your list of references. Recall that you must have at least 4 references and that at least one of your references must be something other than a webpage. If you have found a journal article (or other type of article) electronically, you should list it as a journal article, not as a webpage. The Wikipedia is not appropriate as one of your four main references for your paper.
  • Page 8 & 9 - Your final outline, which has been revised to reflect your final paper. If you did not write an outline before, you need to make sure these pages actually contain an outline.

Part 2: Your previous work (all pieces should be those that have the red marks on them from previously handing them in)
  • Your rough draft commented by the grader.
  • Your original outline with comments/grading.
  • Any revised outlines that you turned in.
  • Your original abstract with comments/grading.
  • Any revised abstracts.
  • Your references with comments/grading (included above if on one page).
  • Any modified reference lists.
  • Your original essay topic with any comments that were written on it.
  • If you have re-focused your topic, you should include an addendum to your topic (i.e. your new topic) indicating the new direction your paper will be taking.

Also, you will be expected to have completed the Library Skills workbook by this day or you will be deducted an extremely large number of points on your final essay grade. If you have not yet completed the Library Skills workbook, follow this link to do so.

Due date

You must hand this part of the assignment in at the beginning of lecture on Monday, November 20th. Recall that failure to satisfactorially complete this portion of the course will result in an automatic F grade assigned in CSE 115.
